Public Menorah Lightings
Chabad Neshama Center has Giant Menorahs in a few locations including Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach and Coney Island. The small bright flames light up the cold winter night as hundreds gather to watch the spectacular giant public menorah lighting. Lively music fills the air as people dance together in unison. The excitement of Chanukah is felt as Dreidels and doughnuts are given out to the crowd. The scene is exciting that even passerby's stop to take part in the holiday festivities. The menorah is a symbol of hope and Jewish pride.
The kindling of the Chanukah Menorah is the focal point of this festival, commemorating the victory of a small band of dedicated Jews over the vast Syrian and Greek armies. Following their victory they immediately sought to re-light the Menorah in the Beis Hamikdash. Only one container of pure oil could be found enough to last just for one day miraculously it burned for eight days until a fresh supply could be obtained. This was the miracle of Chanukah. The Menorah symbolizes freedom and strength of the Jewish spirit and is kindled on each of the eight nights of Chanukah.
One of the edicts of the Festival is to publicize the miracle. For many years now it has been the custom to erect Giant Menorahs in public places so that the public may celebrate the holiday of Chanukah.
This event publicizes our religious freedom.
